SANDSIDE- A BRIEF HISTORY
Originally this was called "Dixies", for the Norse Dike meaning trench or channel, implying that the Viking longboats beached here.
The jetty of land opposite the Restaurant was once known as Dixies Pier and the house next door was Dixies Inn. (The Flippin Fluke Restaurant was built circa 1600). It was to be here that the dead were brought from Witherslack by boat, before being taken for burial to Beetham Churchyard, this being the closest consecrated ground.
When Milnthorpe was a main West Coast Port, the area became known as Sandside Milnthorpe and in the 1860's shortened to Sandside.
During the 18th century, Sandside and the Dixies Inn earned itself a sleazy reputation for slavery and smuggling and today it is difficult to sort fact from fiction.
At this time during the high tides a ferry ran from Dixies Pier to Foulshaw on the opposite side of the bay from the restaurant. At low tide the distance was covered by coach, a particually treacherous method and many people perished on the sands, victims of both quicksand and fast rising tides.
The Dixies Inn closed in the early 1900's, due to the lack of trade owing to the closure of the Port and the opening of the railway.
